1080i and 1080p are the same resolution. The 1080i your cable box sends out is the same number of pixels that your 1080p TV has. Can I convert a HD 1080p signal to a HD 1080i? My xbox 360 seems to have the ability to switch to 1080p so that i might be able to watch a 1080p movie but my projector will only support up to a 1080/60i and a 1080/24PsF.

I am new to all of this and was looking at buying a hdtv. Now I have Directv and I have read that they only broadcast their HD channels in 1080i.
My Xbox 360 I guess will display in 1080i. I don't see alot of things being offered in 1080p except some HD movies in both formats. I don't think I need a 1080p set right now and I am also concerned about cost right now. I don't want to get a 720p set if it won't display in 1080i for my Directv. So basiclly I am asking if I can get a 720p set to display in 1080i or do I need a 1080p set to run 1080i? Again, I am new to all of this and hope I have not confused anyone with how I have worded this question.thank you for your time,RJ.
720 Technically should be a better picture but its nearly impossible to tell on todays tv's. Directv offers mostly 1080I but I know they have at least 4 stations that offer 720p.To answer your question, every tv I have seen that is 1080I or 720 can do either.
The tv's for the most part either scale down or scale up to their native screen resolution. You can set your xbox to any resolution you want depending on your tv and what you like.I have a 720p/1080I tv and switch between 720/1080I settings on my devices and I cant see any difference, including on my Xbox 360. Are basically the same thing and are therefore interchangeable.
Like the other poster said, if you have a 720p TV it will scale all 1080i (and 1080p if it can accept them) signals to fit it's native resolution of 720p.I am almost positive that there are not any 720p native displays that can not display a 1080i signal in either 720p or 1080i.There are however, some native 1080i displays (some CRT HD Rear Projection sets) that will not display 720p. That won't affect you, or even most people as there are not that many people that have a 1080i only CRT HDTV (or CRT HDTVs for that matter lol) but I figured I would let you know anyway. But as far as buying a new 720p display, you are good for 720p or 1080i. You are good for 1080p as well if you buy a high end 720p TV, as long as it is a pretty new model, as they usually will accept 1080p signals, whereas older or lower end 720p models will not. You won't be able to display in 1080p, but you will be able to take a 1080p signal and downconvert it to 720p and display it that way.I hope I answered your question and didn't confuse you more lol.Good luck.
